Science Show Report

On the 17/11/11 Nick the science genius came to our school, Bishop Galvin. Nick explained the basics and the complications of science. He showed us well known science tricks such as the egg trick to take the shell off without boiling it, and the not as well known trick of filling a tin can up halfway and tilting it.  The reaction of the students of the school tells the difference between science and engaging science.  For a clear and easy way of explaining science, I would give Nick and his company a nine and a half out of ten. In other words a brilliant performance.

WHEN THE BISHOPS SKYPED THE JACKSONS

Last month when the President of America visited Ireland some children in Page Jackson School decided to do a project on Ireland. They got all the information they could about Ireland and the Irish people so they could see where their President was going to. Then they wanted to hear the Irish brogue

So they skyped us. We could see each other and they asked us many questions on Ireland, our school, sports, and Gaeilge. We spoke Irish for them and sang our National Anthem. We showed them a hurl, slitor and did the ‘Hacka’ in Irish as taught to us by our teachers.

They asked us what was on our school cafeteria menu each day? Also what time we had to get up at to get the school bus? We had a great laugh when we asked them where their parents parked their cars at night? (garage) and to say potatoe and tomatoe. We told them that we knew their school bus driver as we saw him on the Simpsons !

They all stood up and Pledged Allegiance to their flag which they do daily in the mornings in school.
It was fun speaking to the children in Page Jackson School in West Virginia and we wish to thank them for their lovely cards and photos they sent over to us!

Go raibh mile maith agaibh.

From the children in Bishop Shanahan and Bishop Galvin National Schools.

5th Class

Ms. Kelly's 5th class wrote this lovely poem called "Hope".

‘Hope’

by Ms Kelly’s Class

Hope is something you can’t see

Hope is something inside me

Hope can be a real friend

If something’s broken hope will mend

Hope can be a star in the sky

Hope will never want to say `bye

Hope is an adventure when you go exploring

Hope is a whale searching in the morning

Hope is the farmer planting his seeds,

Hope is the people making necklaces with beads.

Hope isn’t about a new flashy car,

Hope is the person who you really are.

Hope is children playing free

Hoping to be managed by Trapattoni

Hope is Robbie putting it in the net

Hope is the men that win their bet

Hope is a boy kicking a ball in the park,

It’s not someone sitting in the dark,

Hope is scoring a goal against your friend

Keep hope and you’ll be in front of the Stretford end

Hope is a footballer fighting to the end,

Hope is a footballer always trying to mend.

McManamon wins a free and it’s out very far

But Cluxton has hope -He kicks it over the bar

Hope is the thing that gets us out of bed in the morning.

Hope is winning, hope has a warning.

Hope is Ireland winning the World Cup

Hope is a mother learning to cook.

Hope, hope you have to believe

Hope, hope has to succeed

When you wake at night you get a fright

But think of hope and you’ll be alright

Hope is a school boy glancing at the clock,

Five minutes to go he’s losing the plot.

Hope is Michael  D. waiting for the news.

Hope is Imelda May singing the blues.

Hope is a poem that we write in school

Hope is a bully that looks like a fool

Hope is a dream.

Hope is my team.

Hope is a baby crying;

It’s a bird flying

Hope is joy

It’s a baby boy.

Hope means love.

Like a Christmas dove.

Hope is nice weather,

Or finding a black feather,

Hope is a test.

It will make you try your best.

Hope is a seed

Everyone will need

Hope is a dream,

That’s flowing down a stream.

Hope is a wonder that travels the valleys

Hope is what gets us out of evil alleys

Hope is the thing that grants your wishes

Hope is something everyone misses

Hope is a token you can take or leave-

You’ll regret it if you don’t believe

Hope is speeding on an old rusty bike,

It’s the top of a mountain after a 3 mile hike,

It’s finding your house when you’re soaked to the bone,

Its texting your friends till late on the phone,

Hope’s a long hard journey with the wind on your back,

It’s finding something that you lack

Hope is a love; Hope is a friend,

Hope is the risk you take in the end!!

Making Pizza

On the 1stof December, Mr Geraghty’s 5thclass made pizza. We had to bring in a pizza base, sauce, toppings, cheese, a spoon and a pizza tray. We all had a partner. On that Thursday we all went down to the cookery room after little break. Everyone was excited. When we went down we all got our table positions. Then we took out our pizza base and began to put on the sauce. Then we added the cheese and finally the toppings. It was fun putting them on. After that they went into the oven. After a little while, they were ready. One person from each pair went down to get it. Then they all came back. Everyone sat down and enjoyed their pizza.

                      Bullies

Bullies think they’re mad but they’re just sad.

They think they rule but they just drool.

They can give you hell but they’ll stop if you just tell.

They think they’re gods in the skies.

But bullies are things I despise.

They won’t pick on someone their own size.

They say they’re tough but it’s all lies.

I wish the world was free from bullies.

Because bullying is certainly not funny.

                                                          By Aaron

Bullying

A bully is a coward,

In every single way,

He probably has a problem,

But he’s way too tough to say.

He may not be good-looking,

And very mean inside,

But that gives him no reason,

To make you go and hide.

When you’re being bullied,

You feel so very sad,

You just wonder, wonder, wonder,

What made him go so bad.

After school I’m thinking,

What would happen the next day,

I just keep on hoping,

It will go really OK.

Then one day I told someone,

A grown up person though,

Then she told my teacher,

And I didn’t feel so low.

So our teacher called us out,

And was talking for a while,

The bully said “I’m sorry”,

So I had a great big smile.

Now all the fights are over,

My life is very swell,

I feel much better than I did,

That’s why you have to tell.

The Life of a Bully

A bully may be violent

He may pick on someone silent

He thinks he’s the king

It’s not a nice thing

The victim will be sad

The bully will be glad

I wonder what made him so bad

Maybe his mother drove him mad

A bully is sour

He thinks he has all the power

He might take your hat

But in the end he’s the black cat

By Alan

 Bullying Poem

Bullies normally wait at the school gate,

They also think they are so great.

They also punch and get a big bunch.

They might annoy you so much your head might go pop.

But all you do is say stop.

You might be afraid to tell teacher

Because they can get meaner.

All you have to do is say stop.

They might make you a slave or dig your own grave.

But all you have to say is stop.

If stop isn’t working and your parents are looking.

You tell what they do and you might say “woohoo”,

Because it is all taken care of.

             Science Fun in the Classroom

As a treat on Monday the 14th of November Ms Kelly’s class got a surprise visit from an astronomer named Deirdre. This was for Science Week. On Monday when Deirdre came in she told us about Orion the hunter. Orion the hunter is a group of stars when joined together makes the shape of a warrior. Deirdre showed us how to make a map to find Orion the hunter.

Betelgeuse is the shoulder of Orion the hunter. Betelgeuse is coming to the end of his life. Betelgeuse has nearly burnt all of his fuel and they don’t know when he will die. When Betelgeuse dies it will cause a big explosion, however we will not see it for we are 640 light-years away. When Betelgeuse dies another star will take his place. The star will be born from a big cloud of gas in Orion the hunter. This cloud of gas is called Orion Nebula. In case you are wondering when a star dies it forms a circle and then it starts to spin. From that circle a new star is formed.

After we learned about the Orion Nebula, she handed us out black paper and a bucket of pastels and chalk. Then she put up a picture of the Orion Nebula on the board so we could draw it. She then showed us how to create special effects of light. When we were finished our pictures Deirdre took photographs of them.  She gave us a mission to try to find the Orion Nebula at home and draw it!! We also got pencils and bookmarks for Science Week. It was a great day.

Below are some of our pictures.

 International Karate Competition

My name is Theo Rush. I am in 5th class. I am 11 years old. On Saturday 28 of May I competed in the 47 International Kenpo Karate Competition in Madrid. I am in Loreto College Kenpo Karate Club. I have been doing Karate since I was 5 years old. I am now a purple belt but still have a lot to learn. When I got to the competition I was so nervous I could hardly stand. I was competing against 17 different countries. There were about 30-35 children in my age group. There were only 21 people in total in Loreto College competing but we still got 35 medals! I won a silver and a bronze. I am really looking forward to next year in Utrecht.

Epic 11

It all started about a month before the recording when our teacher, Mr. Devaney announced to the class, the competition details.
He then played us the song which had been chosen, and immediately we wanted to take part!
The choir decided together that they would give up some of their break times in order to perfect the performance.
We also had a solo singer Charleen Murphy who sang ‘You are not Alone’ by Michael Jackson, with the beautiful piano accompaniment of Alex McGrane Maher.
She then sang ‘to Make you Feel my Love’ by Bob Dylan, acappella.
The group EPIC 11 sang their own version of ‘That Thing You Do’ by The Wonders’ with the help of Ryan Meaney on guitar and David Donnelly on drums.
We finally recorded our showcase on the 21 of June 2011....
Win or lose, we had a great time together!!!
We would like to kindly thank Avoca National School for giving us this wonderful opportunity.
We are also very thankful for the support of our class teacher for giving up his lunch breaks to put the band in action!
